Mass Casitas

Affordable, modular housing prototypes with Oregon-grown, harvested, and manufactured mass timber

This mass plywood panel (MPP) modular housing system is being designed by Salazar Architect in partnership with Hacienda CDC and Walsh Construction. The homes are adaptable to Oregon’s varied climate zones and support many household types. Funded primarily by the State of Oregon, this innovative affordable housing development lays the groundwork for a new modular home factory to be built at the Port of Portland.

This affordable housing strategy is designed to benefit Oregon’s economy: from sustainable timber harvest to processing raw materials to assembling modular housing and shipping and installation. It will have deep positive local impacts, with the first six homes being built in Talent, Madras, Portland, and on Oregon’s coast. By designing with various options for foundations and climate controls, the homes respond to the unique needs of each site. They are resilient, eco-friendly, and celebrate the natural MPP material to create biophilic interior spaces. Learn more about this work here.
