Ash & Pine

Urban infill affordable & workforce housing

Located in the Rockwood Town Center “Triangle” of Gresham, Oregon, the Ash & Pine project will serve one of the most diverse communities in East Multnomah County. Rockwood is a historically neglected community whose 40,000 residents have a life expectancy that is 10-years shorter than the rest of the Portland Metro area. The project team centered its approach on supporting the community.

The “Weaving” design concept was born from the idea of how each thread makes a fabric stronger and creates a self-supporting matrix, as each resident of the Rockwood area brings their uniqueness to make the community stronger and more resilient. The Weaving concept in exterior design was achieved through a combination of a variety of different siding materials, paint, and textures.

At the center of a developing neighborhood, the site is a block from a light rail station, adjacent to a Park-n-Ride that is slated for redevelopment, and within walking distance of the CDC’s neighborhood assets. The project was informed by community engagement efforts with the CDC’s community, including discussions around the common area programs, outdoor recreation, and exterior colors.
