Small Homes NW

Affordable rental ADUs for a community-based anti-displacement strategy

Small Homes NW is an innovative ADU development that will create equitable and inclusive community-based accessory dwelling units (ADU) in the Cully, Lents, and Inner North/Northeast Portland neighborhoods. Our client’s goal is to build up income and assets for low-income homeowners while providing affordable rental ADUs for community members who might otherwise be displaced. Small Homes NW is funded by Meyer Memorial Trust and partially supported through pro-bono hours by Salazar Architect. The architectural scope includes best practices research, design work, community meetings, and creating permit documents. Our ADU is designed to be flexible so that elders, singles, and small families feel at home while also being affordable to build and as sustainable as possible. The work recently completed Schematic Design and is exploring meeting Earth Advantage standards and certification. The Community Design process consists of meetings with homeowners and future residents to gain input and insight about the design. It is still underway and being re-imagined during COVID-19.
